    James Anderson DePreist (Nov. 21, 1936-Feb. 8, 2013) was one of the first African-American conductors and National Medal of Arts winner. He was the director emeritus of conducting and orchestral studies at The Juilliard School and Laureate Music Director of the Oregon Symphony. He achieved a significant presence in the recording arena with more than 50 recordings to his credit.
