브리튼은 특히 현악 앙상블을 다루는 데 능숙했으며 여기에 호른, 성악 파트 등을 첨가해서 다양한 작품을 만들었는데, 데니스 브레인과 피터 피어스를 염두에 두고 만든 <세레나데>나 소프라노 바바라 해니건이 빛나는 열창을 들려주는 <레 일루미나시옹> 등 모두가 풍부한 상상력과 예리한 감정 표현이 인상적인 걸작들이다.
