  • ‘전설의 명연’이라는 말은 남용되는 감이 없지 않지만, 1968년 3월 19일 런던 로열 페스티벌 홀에서 있었던 바그너 <방황하는 네덜란드인>은 지금까지도 언급되는 압도적인 공연이었다. 클렘페러는 바그너의 초중기 작품을 특히나 좋아했으며, 특히 <네덜란드인>은 1929년 베를린에서 작곡가의 오리지널 판본을 선보여서 센세이션을 일으킬 만큼 아끼는 곡이었다. 클렘페러가 특히 좋아했으며 당시 바이로이트 무대를 주름잡고 있던 아냐 질랴(젠타)를 비롯해서 최상의 캐스트가 한자리에 모였으며, 특히 데카의 반대로 스튜디오 레코딩에 참가하지 못했던 제임스 킹의 존재가 눈부시다. 스튜디오 녹음을 공연의 리허설로 생각했던 클렘페러답게 전편에 걸친 강렬한 집중력과 긴장감은 그가 남긴 최고의 유산 중 하나로 꼽을 수 있을 만큼 감동적이다. ‘이 탁월한 실황음반은 정말 폭풍이 몰아치는 듯하며... 모든 면에서 클렘페러의 뛰어난 스튜디오 녹음마저도 능가한다’ - 그라모폰
