  • In the 19th century the waltz not only conquered the salons of the bourgeoisie, but also spread like wildfire through all classes of society. This populai form stimulated composers not only because of its rewarding musical structure, but also because it was seen as a means of increasing their reputation - and their income. This applied to Schubert as well as to Liszt, Chopin and Grieg. Debussy's and Ravel's interest in the waltz was characterized by nostalgia and decadence. But for all composers, the piano - as the bourgeoisie's favored instrument - was the most surefine means of obtaining a rapid and widespread dissemination.
