셰익스피어가 1597년에 발표한 희극 `윈저의 유쾌한 아낙네들`을 원전으로 삼아, 살리에리가 1799년에 `팔스타프 혹은 3개의 장난`이라는 제목으로 발표한 오페라.
발표당시의 절찬에도 불구하고 오랫동안 잊혀져 있다가 1961년에 이르러서야 비로소 부활 상영되기 시작하였다.
이 dvd는 1995년 쉬베찡거 페스티벌 공연 실황을 수록한 것으로, 르와조리르 레이블을 통해 발매하였던 일련의 모짜르트 오페라 음반들을 통해 평론가들로부터 가디너와 호그우드 이상이라는 찬사와 함께 매우 높은 평가를 얻었던 외스트만이 슈트트가르트 방송 교향악단 등을 이끌고 특유의 고전적이고 단아한 형태의 연주를 선보이고 있다.
