영국 왕의 대관식에서 음악은 항상 중요한 역할을 담당했다. 20세기에는 1902년 에드워드 7세를 위해 패리가, 1911년 조지 5세를 위해 엘가가, 1937년 조지 6세를 위해 월튼이, 그리고 가장 최근에는 1953년 엘리자베스 2세를 위해 월튼이 작곡한 대관식곡과 같이 위대한 작품을 많이 접할 수 있었다. 헨델은 1727년 조지 2세의 대관식에서 사용될 퍼셀, 탈리스. 블로우, 기본의 음악과 함께 사용될 찬가4곡을 의뢰받았다.
헨델의 4곡 중 한 곡은 현재 대관식에도 사용되는데, 그 곡은 바로 ‘사제 자독(Zadok the Priest)' 이다. 이 찬가는, 곡 길이가 가장 짧음에도 불구하고 청중을 놀래고 흥분시키는 힘이 있는데, 분명 1727년 10월 11일 웨스트민스터 대성당에 모인 사람들을 열광시켰음에 틀림없다.
