프랑크푸르트 1200년 기념으로 위촉되어 현대 도시의 소외문제를 음악화한 문제작이다. 바로크의 고전모음곡 형식에서부터 즉흥적이고 기계적인 현대어법까지 자유자제로 구사하고 있는 괴벨스의 능력이 탁월하게 나타나고 있다.
특히 <서로게이트>와<지나간 것들의 나라에서>, 이 두곡에서 마치 한편의 락음악을 연상시키는 역동적인 오케스트라와 독주자의 노래로 모아지는 집중력은 가히 압권을 이룬다.
