○ 프로코피에프의 발레음악 <로미오와 줄리엣>은 1938년이래 수많은 안무가에 의해 발레로 만들어졌다. 레오니드 라브로프스키, 프레데릭 애쉬튼, 존 크랑코, 케네스 맥밀란, 모리스 베자르, 존 노이마이어, 유리 그리가로비치, 장 필립 마이요, 그리고 우리나라의 유니버설 발레를 위해 올레그 비노그라도프가 안무한 최신작에 이르기까지... 그러나 이 목록에 루돌프 누레예프라는 이름도 결코 빼 놓을 수 없다.

○ 키로프 발레 출신의 루돌프 누레예프(1938~1993)는 1961년에 유럽으로 망명하면서 누레예프 신드롬을 몰고 왔다. 이전에 결코 볼 수 없었던 야성적인 카리스마, 그와 대조적인 고귀함을 동시에 지닌 이 놀라운 발레리노는 은퇴를 예정했던 20세 연상의 마고트 폰테인의 마음을 되돌리게 하는가 하면 서유럽에 전해지지 않았던 러시아 발레의 보물을 재현하는데도 힘썼다. 그러다가 자연스럽게 안무에도 발을 들여놓게 된 것이다.

○ 특히 1984년 유서깊은 파리 오페라 발레의 예술감독으로 취임하면서 자신이 그간 재안무한 <로미오와 줄리엣>, <돈 키호테> 등등을 이 발레단의 레퍼토리에 편입시켰다. 재직 중에는 돈을 너무 많이 들인 프로덕션이란 비난도 받았지만 그가 세상을 떠난 지금, 파리 오페라 발레가 세계 최고 수준으로 발전한 원동력은 누레예프가 다져놓은 발판에 있음을 인정하는 분위기로 바뀌었다.

○ 이 영상물은 1999년 파리 오페라 발레가 누레예프의 <로미오와 줄리엣>을 연습하고 공연하는 과정을 다채로운 인터뷰를 곁들여 흥미롭게 편집한 것이다. 파리 오페라 발레의 간판스타인 마누엘 레그리(로미오), 엘리자베스 모랭(줄리엣)의 감수성 넘치는 춤, 그리고 이들이 느낀 바를 밝히는 인터뷰는 발레토마니아에게 더할 나위 없이 귀중한 선물이 될 것이다.
