거의 반세기 동안 축적된 스미스소니언 포크웨이의 방대한 아카이브에서도 아프리칸-아메리칸 밸러드를 담은 본 앨범처럼 그 중요성과 역사성이 인정받는 경우도 매우 드물다. 가스펠과 블루스, 포크는 바로 흑인 밸러드 트래디션의 여명기인 1890-1920에 태동하였기 때문이다. Lead Belly, Warner Williams, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, Memphis Slim, Big Bill Broonzy가 연주하고 노래하는 곡에는 흑인들의 영혼의 깊이가 느껴지는 민족의 역사가 담겨있는 듯하다.
